Members of Port Townsend Interact and Key Club work together to thank first responders!

For the past two months, members of both Port Townsend High School service clubs have been working together, even though remotely, to make ‘no-sew’ blankets and cards to give to first responders at the Port Townsend Firehall to thank them for their service.

Key Club is sponsored by Port Townsend Kiwanis and Interact is sponsored by both the Port Townsend Rotary and the Port Townsend Sunrise Rotary Clubs. Both organizations foster service and leadership. The members have struggled this year to find meaningful ways to provide service with the restrictions posed by Covid - 19. At a meeting in early January, the clubs decided that they could design cards, and they could make no-sew fleece blankets. At their zoom meetings the members worked at home in zoom breakout rooms. While they missed the comradery of working face to face, they were able to feel connected by problem solving the physical work of cutting and knotting the fabric into blankets in small groups in their zoom breakout rooms.

Once the project was complete, members of both clubs met at the Port Townsend Firehall at 709 Harrison.  They hastily signed the digital cards they had designed, and organized the blankets to present to the first responders on duty.

The Firefighters got into the spirit of the event. They pulled out a truck, and hung a club banner for a photo op. Club members Grace Wentzel and Gina Brown gave short speeches thanking the first responders for their service and for the extra risks that they have had to take during this pandemic. To be socially distanced, the hand off of blankets did involve a bit of throwing, and a brief line up for the official photo.

Club members expressed their sentiment of thanks in the cards, and made the blankets as a more tangible  expression of their gratitude. Both clubs are hoping to begin hybrid meetings and more opportunities for service as the state has opened the opportunities for student contact.
